Song Of The Day 2/7/2016: La Cumbia Moderna De Soledad – “¿Crees Que Soy Sexy?”

Quarterly Covers Report – It's the first QCR of 2016, a week that's set aside every three months for the rapturous strains of people doing other people's songs that brings joy to millions, so HQ would really appreciate it if all of you could please refrain from dying until a week from today at the earliest. Seriously. I've been dealing with mortality issues since I was about six freaking years old; so far this year it's been like the Speed Learning of Natural Causes. Thanks. Sorry if that seems crass.

Our first contestants this week are La Cumbia Moderna De Soledad from Colombia with their back-to-basics reading of Rod Stewart's "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" (Not "Do Ya." "Da Ya." That sounds marginally more like an art movement.) This was Rod's jump-the-shark-in-platforms moment, as you'll recall. The one magical swipe that erased all the residue from his magical work with Faces, the Every Picture Tells a Story album and "The Killing of Georgie." Fwap. Gone with a wave of his leopard-skin kerchief. This despite the fairly funny line about the girl needing a dime so she could call her mother. La Cumbia go back to nature, brandishing the primitive animalistic eroticism that fueled the original. It's perhaps quite as lustful as Bob & Ray's version, but things seldom are.
