Song Of The Day 6/10/2016: Network – “Save Me, Save Me”

Waxing Gibbous – Our final record this week to be infiltrated by Bee Gees is from their mural-at-the-bottom-of-the-swimming-pool era after Saturday Night Fever launched them into the Foyer Of The Eternals. "Save Me, Save Me" from Network was a Gibb-Galuten-Richardson production. Albhy Galuten was a producer for most of the Bee Gees' disco hits, from "You Should Be Dancing" onward. Karl Richardson was the engineer on many of the same recordings. Since they all worked on the same projects -- records by Dionne Warwick, Andy Gibb, Barbra Streisand and "Grease" by Frankie Valli -- if you're looking for a particular set of figureheads on which to direct your thanks/blame for the dominant sounds of the late '70s, they'd probably be pretty good nominees. I believe they did most of their work after the Gibbs had moved to Miami. As for Network, they were from New York. They were a slightly edgier Firefall. Or a less prickly Player. They had two albums, Network and Nightwork. Nutwork and Newtwork were shelved, I guess. This song is the kind of compact pop meringue that dentists and aromatherapists couldn't get enough of in 1978, but even on something like this you can hear how it benefits from Dr. Gibb.

That does it for Gibb Week. Now go listen to Main Course
